Violence and cheating accusations spoil Kenya vote

Violence is threatening to engulf Kenya amid accusations that the freshly re-elected President rigged the vote. A massive police presence is swamping an opposition stronghold in the capital Nairobi’s biggest slum. Information from the country is hard to come by but it’s thought that at least 18 people have been killed in violence.

President Mwai Kibaki was sworn in for a second five-year term shortly after election officials announced the result two days late. But his rival Raila Odinga claims the results were doctored.

EU observers called the vote counting process unsatisfactory. Britain has voiced “real concerns” over voting irregularities in its former colony. Washington though has congratulated Kibaki and called for calm.
