Pope Benedict XVI has welcomed the conversion of the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to Catholicism.
Blair, who confided in the Pope about his intentions just before stepping down from office, has always been publically reticent about his faith.
He once caused a storm by saying that British people think anyone who talks about their religion is “a bit of a nutter.”
His wife Cherie, and their four children, are already Catholic .
But many of the Blairs’ views are directly opposed to fundamental Catholic beliefs. They are both pro-choice where abortion is concerned, and as Prime Minister, Tony Blair supported gay rights and stem cell research.
