Three young men have been given jail sentences totalling 39 years, for torturing, sexually assaulting and murdering a cell-mate at a juvenile detention centre in Germany.

The court in Bonn jailed a 20 year old defendant for 15 years, a 21 year old for 14 years, and a 17 year old was given the maximum term allowed for a minor – ten years in prison.

The three – who were not fully named in court – had confessed to putting their 20 year old cell-mate through an 11 hour ordeal in November last year.

The victim’s family were in court to hear the sentencing.

The defendants had forced their victim to drink a cocktail of hot chili-peppers and salt until he threw up – they subjected him to a serious sexual assault – and then they hanged him with bed-sheets.

The brutality of the crime led to the resignation of the head of the centre in Siegburg.
