One of Britain’s best-known businesswomen has died suddenly at the age of 64 after a major brain haemorrhage. A family statement said Dame Anita Roddick was rushed to hospital after she collapsed at her home on the south coast of England. Her husband and two daughters were at her bedside when she died.
With its cruelty-free, ethically-sourced products, the Body Shop became one of the icons of the British high street in the 1980’s. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Roddick opened her first store in Brighton in 1976. The business mushroomed into an empire of more than 200 stores serving around 77 million customers in 51 different markets. It was sold to France’s L’Oreal last year, but is run independently.
