The impact of the foot-and-mouth outbreak in the UK is having knock-on effects in Europe. In France in the city of Nimes the traditional bull running has been cancelled. However the bullfights will continue.
Henri Itier from the French Bullfighting Association: “We find it hard to understand. If we had cases in France it would be easier, but it’s in England and we are in the South of France.”
However vets in France are well aware of the potential disaster to the economy if the disease takes hold in the country.
Vet Marie-Anne Richard said: “Faced with such a disease and the enormous danger it presents the economy it is absolutley necessary to adopt strict controls.”
The foot-and-mouth outbreak in Britain has already closed down one French cattle market in Parthenay in the west of the country.
