The Afghan President has launched a stinging attack on the tactics of Nato and US-led forces. Hamid Karzai says troops are failing to coordinate with their Afghan allies and innocent civilians are becoming victims of “reckless operations.”

“The disproportionate use of force in a situation and the lack of coordination with the Afghan government is causing these casualties. You don’t fight a terrorist by firing a fieldgun 37 kilometres away into a target. That is surely bound to cause civilian casualties,” he said.

Karzai’s comments come in a week in which up to 90 Afghan civilians were killed in air strikes in Helmand province. It is thought foreign military action has claimed more civilian lives this year than have been killed by insurgents. Nato and US military authorities say their troops do not target civilians.
