Syrian voters have overwhelmingly backed their President to stay in office for another 7 years. 41-year-old Bachar al-Assad received 98 per cent support in a referendum held on Sunday. The official results were only revealed today. Turnout was also very high at close to 96 per cent. Most opposition parties boycotted the vote saying real democracy did not exist in the country. The Syrian government claimed the vote was fair and open.
