World leaders have been reacting to the announcement of Tony Blair’s resignation. Among them, the European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso: “If Blair was successful in Europe, bringing Europe closer to Britain, he has not yet been able to change the mood completely in Britain.”

Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Perez also gave his reaction: “For us Israelis, he was a man of special meaning, his friendship was both political and religious for Israel with a real understanding about the tragedy of Jewish life.”

The Palestinian information minister Moustafa Barghouti had a blunt message: “We hope that the departure of Mr Blair and the coming of a new prime minister will lead to a serious change in the British politics – that is, less bias to Israeli and more reasonable in cooperating with the Palestinian side.”
