An identity card of a journalist kidnapped in Gaza has been shown in a video tape, allegedly by those holding him. Briton Alan Johnston disappeared on March 12. Images from a little known Islamist group have appeared on an Internet site, with a claim of responsibility for the abduction.

The tape, whose authenticity has not yet been confirmed, calls for Britain to release prisoners, including radical cleric Abu Qatada. The fact that what appears to be Johnston’s identity card has been included in the tape seems to point to the likelihood that it is from his abductors.

The 44-year-old has lived and worked in Gaza for three years and is the only Western correspondent based there full-time. There have been numerous demonstrations calling for his release. Last month another group claimed it had killed the reporter, but that claim could not be verified.
