European leaders are gathering in Berlin this weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which paved the way for the modern EU. And, at a lavish banquet, they will be able to sample two traditional cakes from each member state. Nikolaus Junker from the German Bakers’ Association outlined some of the offerings that will grace the top table, including his country’s contributions: Schwarzwalder Kirchtorte and the Frankfurter Kranz.
The UK is submitting the humble Eccles Cake and Easter favourite the Hot Cross Bun. They are delicious delights more than worthy of the occasion, in the eyes of baker George Criticos. “It is quite wonderful that these two very classical English products, old products, have been remembered and will be used for the 50th anniversary,” he said. New member Romania is also getting in on the act for this weekend’s feast. Clearly, for Europe’s great and good, dieting will have to start – on Monday!
