A Winter's tale as snow showers make surprise return
Text size Aa Aa

Heavy snowfalls, only hours before the official start of Spring, have caused major disruption across Europe. In parts of Switzerland 37 centimetres fell in only a matter of hours, producing predictable problems for travellers. In southern Austria 40,000 homes were left without power as electricity lines were brought down by snow-laden falling trees.

Overnight, Red Cross workers supplied stranded motorway drivers with blankets and hot drinks. But they should make the most of it; the cold snap is a short one and should only last a couple of days.
