Bird flu strikes again in Turkey
Text size Aa Aa

A year after bird flu killed four children in Turkey the country is dealing with a new outbreak which may have infected three more youngsters. They have been admitted to hospital with flu-like symptoms. Officials have confirmed 170 chickens died of the disease in a village in the southeast of the country. It is the latest country in Europe to confirm the return of bird flu this winter.

Experts are trying to establish if there is a link between cases in the UK and Hungary. Extensive culls have been carried out in all three countries. Tests have confirmed the deadly H5N1 virus was involved in the British and Hungarian outbreaks. It is not yet known if it is the same strain of the disease in Turkey.
