Police in Britain are intensifying their search for evidence around houses in Birmingham raided in this week’s anti terror operation. Nine men have been detained during the investigation. Under UK law, detectives can hold the suspects for 28 days before bringing them to court.

The arrests and police activity have caused concern among local residents in Birmingham, a city which is home to a big Asian and Moslem population. Amid Harmin is a youth worker: “All the raids the British police has done, they have all been alleged plots, so until anything is proven, until I actually see the evidence, I’m not gonna believe it. I think the whole community feels the same way, there are all alleged plots, until everything is proven, we are not gonna believe anything.”

According to security analysts, the plotters may have been planning to kidnap a British muslim soldier. The police action followed several months of surveillance and meticulous planning. Investigators have underlined that the enquiry will take many weeks to conclude.
