Dozens of people at Britain’s largest immigration detention centre have staged a protest over safety fears and poor conditions. Prison and police officers, including riot police, and firefighters were called to the centre in west London this morning after several fires were started.
In a report published on Tuesday, the chief inspector of prisons said staff had failed to meet many standards. Nearly two thirds of detainees said they felt unsafe, largely over fears of bullying by staff. Harmondsworth Immigration Detention Centre is not a prison but immigrants and asylum seekers are held, pending decisions on deportation.
