A suicide bomber wearing an explosive-laden vest has killed at least 35 people at a police recruiting centre in Baghdad. It is the latest in a wave of violence that commentators say undermines US and Iraqi government efforts to improve security. Some 60 people have been taken to hospital with various injuries after the suicide attack. At least a further 20 people have died in other separate attacks close to Baghdad.
Police are also looking for a group of Shi’ite travellers who were kidnapped after gunmen stopped their minibuses south of the capital. Nine people are reported to have been killed at the scene. Amid the continuing violence, Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has called for what he calls a “complete” cabinet reshuffle.
