Russia and Iran will continue talks this weekend on Tehran’s disputed nuclear programme. The two sides have been meeting in Moscow after Iran said it would reconsider its ties with the UN’s atomic watchdog if European sanctions are approved. The European draft resolution would order all countries to ban the supply of material and technology that could contribute to Iran’s nuclear programmes.
But Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has vowed to carry on regardless. He says the country’s enemies can do nothing to stop it and he insists Iran is pursuing nuclear power for peaceful purposes. Like Tehran, Moscow has also rejected the EU proposals, describing the sanctions as too broad and too strong. It wants large chunks of the text to be deleted to exclude the seizure of Iranian assets and travel bans on Iranian officials.
