The winners of this year’s prestigious Prince of Asturias prizes will be picking up their awards in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo this evening. The Prince of Asturias and heir to the throne Prince Felipe himself will preside over the ceremony. The eight awards are handed out annually for outstanding contributions to areas ranging from the arts and science to sports and international cooperation.
American author Paul Auster picked up this year’s literature prize. The social sciences award went to Ireland’s first woman president and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson. Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodovar received the arts prize. UNICEF, the National Geographic Society and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are also among the laureates.
