The funeral has been held in Moscow for the murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was well known for her investigative newspaper articles. She was shot dead in the lift of her apartment block in the Russian capital on Saturday. The reporter had been a fierce critic of the Kremlin and in particular its policies in Chechnya. Many in Russia and further afield are voicing the belief that her death was a political killing.
After being criticised for remaining silent about the death, President Vladimir Putin yesterday described the killing as tragic and promised an objective inquiry. Politkovskaya’s newspaper has offered a reward of 800 thousand euros to anyone who helps solve the crime. At least 12 reporters have been murdered in Russia in the past six years.
