Tensions remain high in the Gaza Strip and West Bank as Palestinians observed a general strike following Sunday’s clashes in which eight people died and at least 100 were injured in factional violence. Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades militants supportive of Fatah closed down a market in Bethlehem.
There were reports gunmen from rival Palestinian factions killed one person and wounded at least four others in today’s clashes. Members of Fatah’s Force 17 Guard patrolled the streets of Gaza City as the Hamas-led government ordered all ministries to close to protest against Fatah attacks on government buildings.
Sunday’s violence was the worst internal fighting in months over unpaid wages and stalled unity talks. There was also tension as funeral processions were held in the Gaza Strip for Fatah members killed yesterday. The Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has called for calm.
