The Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich has met with European leaders in Brussels to outline his country’s plans to join the EU in the long term. But the pro-Russian Yanukovich also told NATO commanders that public scepticism in Ukraine makes it unlikely the country will join the military alliance. “We can see today that the public is not ready for it. Only around 20 to 25 percent are in favour of joining. That is why a referendum is inevitable and as the new government has agreed, membership of NATO will only be decided by a referendum result.”

Yanukovich also signed a deal on the EU financing of new meters for gas and oil pipelines in Ukraine. The full interview with Euronews can be seen later this evening.
