An Australian naturalist who won worldwide fame with his Crocodile Hunter documentaries has died in a diving accident. Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while shooting an underwater programme off Australia’s northwest coast. The 44-year-old’s daredevil antics were broadcast around the world but he was severely criticised for holding his baby while feeding a crocodile. He also appeared with Eddie Murphy in Dr Doolittle 2 and built up a small reptile park in Queensland into the Australia Zoo, a major centre for native wildlife.
