Israel waits to launch wider ground war

The broader ground war in Lebanon might be on hold but Israeli troops have been moving further north. They have seized the Christian town of Marjayoun after marching overnight from the border virtually unopposed. Infantrymen were followed by tanks that deployed in roads in the area, drawing intense Hizbollah fire this morning. The militant group says it hit at least two armoured personnel carriers.

Fierce fighting is said to have broken out near Aaita al-Chaab while Hizbollah rockets have two people including a child in the northern Israeli village of Deir al-Assad. The Israeli army lost 15 of its soldiers while 40 Hizbollah guerrillas were killed yesterday, one of the bloodiest days of fighting in the conflict that began after Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.
