A fresh alert has been called in Portugal as fire-fighters battle five major infernos. With rising temperatures and falling humidity, hundreds of blazes have broken out over the last week. But the latest fires are by far much bigger and more dangerous. The army has been asked to help evacuate people in danger. Those with houses threatened by the fires have been doing what they can to save their property. Regional officials have described arsonists taking advantage of the scorching summer heat as “fire terrorists”.
Meanwhile in northern Spain, dozens of forest fires have left at least three people dead. A man who tried to put out a fire threatening his home was confirmed as the third fatality on Monday. The authorities said many of the blazes in the regions of Catalonia and Galicia were started deliberately.
