The US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, has begun a fresh attempt to end the violence in the Middle East. She’s back in Israel for the second time this week for talks with Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert. She’s also due to meet Lebanese leaders again. Rice is looking for an agreement on the main conditions for a ceasefire to be outlined in a UN resolution that could be tabled as early as Tuesday. Israel insists an international peacekeeping force be put in place in south Lebanon to keep Hizbollah away from its border, but its also softened its position saying it will not demand the immediate disarming of the militant group.
