An Israeli missile strike on a van in Gaza on Tuesday killed 11 Palestinians, nine of them civilians. The van was being used to carry rockets. Witnesses said a first missile caused the van to crash, while a second hit a crowd that had gathered as rescuers arrived.
Israeli troops also killed a Palestinian militant in the West Bank earlier today during a raid. One other was wounded. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh met late Tuesday in a bid to calm internal tensions. In violence on Monday, Fatah gunmen set fire to the West Bank office of the prime minister. Tension has been fuelled by Abbas’s decision to call a referendum which, if accepted, would implicitly recognise Israel. Hamas labels the referendum a coup attempt.
