The US has revealed more details about the killing of al Qaeda’s leader in Iraq. Military commanders say Abu Musab al Zarqawi died just under an hour after the first of two large bombs hit his hideout north of Baghdad. A spokesman said he was probably killed by blast waves in the US airstrike. Six people died in the raid.
Meanwhile, on a website, al Qaeda has Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, as its new leader in Iraq. His is not among the names that al Qaeda experts mentioned as possible Zarqawi successors. American-led forces have killed a further seven militants linked to al Qaeda in an attack near Baquba, close to where Zarqawi died. Two children – one of them a 6-month-old baby – were also killed.
US President George Bush has called senior advisors together at Camp David to discuss building on what Washington regards as the success of the Zarqawi operation. The issue of US troop withdrawal from Iraq is also high on the agenda.
