An Islamist militia says it has won a three month bloody battle for the Somali capital and that it is now in their hands. The militia has been fighting an alliance of warlords who have controlled Mogadishu for 15 years. The warlords, who have allegedly been supported by the United States, are said to be fleeing Mogadishu to other parts of Somalia and Kenya. The fighting between the rival factions has left some 350 people dead since February. While many desperately harbour hopes that calm and order will return to the city that’s ruled by the law of the gun, others fear for a future with Islamists at the hellm who want to introduce Sharia law. For its part, the United States has said it is concerned Somalia could become a refuge for foreign terrorists.
