Greek police are blaming left-wing extremists for a bomb attack apparently targeting the country’s culture minister. The powerful device exploded close to George Voulgarakis’s car as he left his home in Athens to go to work. It is believed the explosives were attached to a bicycle and were set off by remote control.
The blast caused no injuries but damaged cars and property in the area. Voulgarakis had been public order minister until February. His move to the culture ministry was widely seen as a demotion due to his handling of a phone tapping scandal that rocked Greece for weeks. Police say Voulgarakis was on a list of senior government officials considered possible targets. He escaped injury in a similar attack three years ago.
