At least 1 300 people have been killed in an earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java. The tremor struck a densely populated area near the city of Yogyakarta at 6 am, local time.many homes collapsed.Local hospitals atruggled to cope with the large number of casualties. There are many injured, mostly victims of collapsing buildings.Scientists said the tremor measures 5.9 on the Richter scale.
People living on the coast about 20 kilometers away panicked on rumours that a Tsunami was about to hit the shore.But the newly established regional Tsunami centre said there was no danger of this happening. Thousands of people fled their homes in the area, conditions were made more difficult when power and telephone lines went down. The airport at Yogyakarta was closed down after cracks appeared in the runway.
