The Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has urged rival forces from both his own Hamas group and President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement to show restraint. He has also promised that there will not be a civil war.
As of Thursday, all Palestinian movements will take part in a two-day meeting aimed at finding a way out of the violence and the political and financial crises which are plaguing the Palestinians. Abbas will be the president of the meeting but he will not travel to Gaza, where Haniyeh is based, instead there will be a video link between Gaza and Ramallah. Abbas is calling for what he described as a “genuine dialogue” to advance the Palestinians’ mutual interests. A new Hamas paramilitary unit clashed with gunmen from a Fatah-dominated security service in Gaza on Monday. The fighting killed the Jordanian driver of a diplomat. The victim’s body was repatriated on Tuesday.
