The European Commission has said it would recommend closer ties with Montenegro, setting it on the road to eventual possible EU membership. “The European perspective is open to Montenegro,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn has declared in a statement.
Official results of Montenegro’s referendum show 55.5 per cent of voters opted for independence from Serbia. This means that the target majority set by the European Union for recognition of the vote has been reached.
The pro-Serb unionists had asked for a recount, saying that there had been irregularities during the ballot, but Referendum Commission President Fratisek Lipka said the request was politically motivated and that no formal complaints had been made.
