Tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions are mounting ahead of Friday’s report from the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that if Iran came under attack it would respond in kind – targeting US interests throughout the world and giving twice as good it got.
The statement from Iran’s spiritual leader comes after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned that appeasement could lead to widespread nuclear proliferation.
“We also have to be concerned when there are statements from Iran, as there apparently were today, that Iran would not only have this technology but would share it, share its knowledge and expertise. Indeed that is one of the fears, that there would be that kind of escape if you will, of knowledge and expertise on these dangerous technologies,” she said. In Friday’s report to the UN Security Council, IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei is expected to say that Teheran has failed to comply with demands to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.
Washington is calling for a draft Chapter 7 resolution which could be used as a launching point for UN sanctions or military action.
