Comments by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi about ‘Communists boiling babies’ have added fresh controversy to the country’s parliamentary election campaign. Berlusconi made the remarks during a rally of his Forza Italia party, which is trailing in the polls to the centre-left opposition.
He said: “I have been accused many times of saying communists eat babies. Go and read the black book on communism and you’ll find that under Mao’s China they didn’t eat babies but they boiled them to fertilise the fields. It’s something horrible but it’s true.” Without responding directly to the comments, centre-left leader Romani Prodi said Berlusconi should talk about the facts of how, in his words, the government had ruined the country over five years. The election campaign has seen a number of bitter exchanges between the main rivals ahead of the vote on April 9th.
