Anger unleashed by Israeli jail raid

Israel’s military operation at a Jericho jail has ignited protests across Palestinian areas. Amid a wave of attacks and kidnappings, Palestinian Prime-Minister designate Ismail Haniyeh warned Israel not to put Ahmed Saadat’s life in jeopardy. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he held Britain and the US responsible for any harm that should come to the high-profile prisoner.

In an explosion of anger in Gaza, European Union, British and US buildings all came under attack. Several foreigners were abducted – some of them later released. Among those seized in Gaza and still being held are two French women working for an aid organisation. Elsewhere, the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt was shut down temporarily, after the EU withdrew its monitors over security concerns.
