The Arabic news station Al Arabiya is demanding a full investigation into the kidnapping and killing of three of its television crew in Iraq. The channel lost contact with news correspondent Atwar Bahjat, her cameraman and sound engineer after they filed a report from Samarra following the bombing of the Shia shrine yesterday.
The bodies of the journalists, who were all Iraqi citizens, were found this morning on the outskirts of the town. A surviving member of the crew said 30-year-old Atwar Bahjat, who is understood to be a Sunni Muslim, was ambushed while in her van. Two of her colleagues reportedly tried to calm the gunmen down but then all three were snatched and taken to an unknown location.
