Israel has agreed to hand over to the Palestinians a payment of nearly 46 million euros – money that was frozen after Hamas’ election victory.
Observers, however, say that future payments are unlikely. The US had urged Israel to keep handing over customs revenues to the Palestinian Authority at least until Hamas formally enters the government. Yesterday the Palestinian President held talks with leaders of the Islamic militant group. The US and EU has warned the Palestinians they risk losing aid money unless Hamas disarms and agrees to recognise Israel. Also, in a report released on Sunday, a probe by the Palestinian attorney-general has revealed that at least 582 million euros in funds from the Palestinian Authority’s coffers have been squandered or stolen by officials over the past few years.
