The first talks have taken place between the Palestinian president and Hamas leaders on forming a new government after the Islamic militant group’s election victory 10 days ago.
Hamas’ three top leaders met Mahmoud Abbas at his Gaza city offices, under heavy police guard.
Hamas’ charter calls for the destruction of Israel, and the US and the EU have said that any Hamas-led government would risk losing aid unless it disarmed and recognised Israel.
After the talks, Hamas said it hoped to form a cabinet later this month after agreeing to convene parliament on February the 16th.
Earlier Abbas said that he did expect that Hamas would most likely form the next government.
