Two foreign teachers have been released after a kidnap ordeal in Gaza. The pair – an Australian and a Dutchman – were seized this morning as they drove to work for the last day of term before the Christmas holidays. The men are employed at a private American school in northern Gaza.

Earlier they were featured in a video released by militants claiming to be from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The gunmen were demanding the release of jailed leaders. However a senior official from the PFLP distanced the group from the abduction. It is yet another sign of growing disorder that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is struggling to contain in Gaza after an Israeli pullout and ahead of next month’s parliamentary election.
