One of the three most wanted suspects from the Balkan wars leaves a Madrid jail for the Hague war crimes court today. Former Croatian General Ante Gotovina was arrested in Spain’s Canary Islands on Wednesday. The 50 year old has been on the run since he was in indicted in 2001
Gotovina is charged with the responsibility for the murders of at least 150 Serbs by troops under his command in 1995 after Croatian forces re-took parts of the country from Serb rebels. A poll in Croatia has shown more than 60 percent of people consider Gotovina’s arrest bad news. Soon after he was caught supporters held protests in the capital Zagreb.
