A lawyer for one of Saddam Hussein’s co-defendants has been shot dead in Baghdad and another wounded. They were caught in an ambush in the Iraqi capital. The attack follows the murder of another Saddam defence lawyer last month. He was kidnapped and shot by armed men who local people said identified themselves as employees of the Interior Ministry.
The government has denied involvement. Meanwhile, US and Iraqi troops pressed ahead with an anti-insurgent operation near the Syrian border. Operation Steel Curtain is now in its fourth day. The United States says it has killed 36 militants so far. One American marine has been shot dead. The violence, however, continued unabated. Bomb attacks aimed at Iraqi security forces have killed at least nine people.
