Race riot rocks British city

In Britain a race riot in Birmingham has left one man stabbed to death, three others knifed and a police officer shot in the leg. The violence between rival Asian and black youths broke out after a week of growing tension in the city, which seems to have roots in an alleged sexual assault on a 14 year old black girl. The clashes began after a public meeting at a church to discuss the alleged assault.

But police insist the violence was not in response to the meeting. A local MP who attended the meeting said there appeared to be a link between the assault and the violence but that most people present accepted the police’s explanation. Twenty years ago the same suburb of Birmingham was the scene of large scale riots between blacks and police.
