So far so good – the message from space from China’s newest heroes. After a flawless launch the country’s second manned space mission is reported to be going well in its five-day orbit of the planet.
The first venture was a solo flight – this latest involves two astronauts. Much of Beijing came to a standstill to watch the blast-off.
“I was really nervous, it’s just the second time China has done this. I feel so happy,” said one woman who watched the event on a large outdoor screen.
“I feel really emotional, like this is a proud monument for Chinese people all over the world and for humankind,” another man said.
China is a latecomer to the space race but is showing no less enthusiasm than the established powers.
Beijing has set up a national astronaut training centre – only the third such facility in the world.
