Violence has continued in Corsica as police faced demonstrators protesting against the recapture of a ferry at the centre of an industrial dispute.
Skirmishes in Bastia lasted for several hours. Workers are angry about yesterday’s raid by French commandos on the Pascal Paoli, a boat belonging to the state ferry company SNCM.
The boat was commandeered in Marseille in protest at plans to sell off the ailing firm for a bargain price. It set sail for Bastia but was seized by special forces and turned back.
It arrived in the port of Toulon last night.
The investment firm set to buy SNCM has proposed limiting its stake to 40 percent but, with the government not prepared to retain more than a symbolic stake, it seems unlikely that workers, who fear job losses, will be placated.
More strikes are planned for this weekend.
