There has been a victory for the “yes” campaign in a referendum on the opening up of Switzerland’s job market to workers from eastern Europe. Final figures show 56 percent of voters backed the government’s plans to extend an agreement with the European Union to its 10 new member states.
Observers say relations between Switzerland and the EU would have become difficult if voters had rejected the changes. Voters said no to EU integration 13 years ago. However, the government has since agreed to a series of complex deals with the bloc concerning cross-border trade and law enforcement.
