Award winners were announced in San Sebastian on Saturday, as the Spanish city’s fifty third international film festival reached its climax.
The Czech film “Something Like Happiness” took top honours, the director walking off with the prestigious Golden Shell. The film is a quirky exploration of love and commitment among a group of characters on the sombre fringes of Czech society. Leading lady Ana Geislerova won the best actress award for her performance as a single mother losing touch with reality. The best director gong went to Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yang for “Sunflower”. It is the second time he has won the award. Argentinian drama “Enlightened By Fire” took the Special Jury Prize. Based on the experiences of an Argentine soldier during the Falklands conflict, it has had strong reviews. How it will play with British audiences remains to be seen.
