German member of the European Parliament Lissy Groner has tied the knot with her partner Sabine Gillessen in Brussels. Mayor Freddy Thielemans, a personal friend, oversaw the ceremony.
Gay marriage is legal in Belgium, but not in Germany, where homosexuals can only have registered partnerships. Groner believes that should change. “There is no discrimination of same-sex couples in Belgium by law. And this is the signal we want to give to the people in Europe, to send the message out: it’s possible to honour the love of same-sex people by law,” she said after exchanging vows. The celebrations will be brief – the 51 year old politician has to leave her 37 year old wife to join Germany’s election campaign.
