Police investigating last month’s terrorist attacks in London do not believe Al Qaeda was involved. According to a report in the British daily Independent newspaper, the four men believed to have carried out the July suicide bombings had no links to al-Qaeda, nor was there a “Mr Big” masterminding the plot.
And the botched bombings two weeks later were simply “copycat” attacks, the paper quotes police sources as saying. The July 7 attacks on London’s transport system claimed 56 lives, including four suspected suicide bombers. Investigators reached the conclusion that the four were working alone after trawling through phone and computer records and interviewing friends of the suspects. The development raises the spectre of more self-sufficient groups forming in the UK, without the need for any input from abroad.
