It has been reported that police in Britain have arrested one of the four men suspected of carrying out the failed bombings in London last week. The Metropolitan Police would not comment on media claims that a bomber had been detained after two raids in Birmingham, in central England. The man, who was held after being shot with a stun gun, has been taken to a high security police station in London for questioning. A suspect package was also found and about 100 nearby homes have been evacuated so a controlled explosion can be carried out.
Elsewhere in Birmingham, a further three arrests were made by anti-terrorism police. And two people were seized on a train travelling to the capital. Meanwhile, investigations in the capital are focused around a flat in north London, where at least two of the four suspects spent some time. Chemicals thought to match those used in the July 21 attempt and bomb-making equipment have been found in a nearby garage. Residents say the two men returned to the flat after the bungled attack, and it is feared they collected explosives before disappearing.
