Raising the stakes in the Iran nuclear row – Tehran has issued the EU with an August 1 deadline to come up with a proposal allowing the country to produce nuclear fuel.
After that, Iran will go its own way, an official spokesman said on state television. He added there would be no backtracking on the right to atomic fuel. The US claims Iran is really trying to build atomic weapons. The EU, and a trio of Britain France and Germany in particular, has been trying to defuse the crisis through a series of meetings. It persuaded Iran to suspend all uranium fuel work in November, and promised to come up with proposals early next month. However, the EU trio has warned it will join Washington in seeking United Nations action if Tehran makes good on its threats to resume nuclear activities.
