Lebanon’s former Christian warlord Samir Geagea has been released after spending 11 years in jail for crimes committed during the 1975-1990 civil war.

He was driven straight to the Beirut airport from the defence ministry where he had been held. He made a statement to supporters, hailing his wife for her campaign to secure his freedom, before boarding a plane for Europe where he is expected to spend several weeks undergoing medical checks.
